about

Not the straightforward ‘Terminally Climactic Forms Vol.2’ that this was supposed to be..

Upon the creation of a new home studio, an improved workflow resulted in a flurry of activity, yielding fragments of what promised to be enough ideas for three of four albums’ worth of new music. This demanded a lot of reflection to ponder how best to assemble everything and what was originally envisioned as a lengthy album ended up being broken into two. 'Desire Lines to Nowhere' is part one.

Whilst most songs conform to the format of the last album, interludes, reprises and other features akin to concept albums were also written during the sessions.

And a loose concept is indeed buried within the use of field recordings which define the overall vibe of this album and its winter 2022 follow-up, with the sounds of both the built (transport) and natural (weather) environment conjuring images of a world outside of the confines of the home; that this world is moving on, with or without my participation.

Essentially adapting the abandoned concept of ‘Meal Deals and Real Feels’, the samples aim to stir up the contradictory desire and trepidation of returning to a word inhabited by large groups of people. In an explicit nod to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, shortwave radio transmissions are also embedded, alluding to reluctance to fully reach out to people in a face-to-face setting. Latent leftist commentary on wider political events can also be discovered, should you commit to repeated listens with a liberal mindset.

The overall result is an ambitious project that conveys the conflicting moods of adjusting to life after enduring a global pandemic for over two years. At times optimistic, at times pensive, the music is crafted to leave the listener the with lingering sense that there exists a more colourful world out there if you believe it to be so.

The addition of instrumentation from ‘world music’ (bagpipes, koto, sitar, etc.) was a conscious choice.

A better life is not waiting to be discovered, it’s waiting to be created.

What if the constants are no longer constants?

What if change really is the only constant?
